Star Trek: The Next Generation is one of the most popular franchises in science fiction history. Produced by Paramount Studios, it ran for 178 episodes from 1987 to 1994 on NBC. These Star Trek movies, featuring Captain Jean-Luc Picard and his crew aboard the ship, USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D, were based on the original Star Trek series created by Gene Roddenberry.

 

Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)

Star Trek: The Motion Picture is the very first movie in the Star Trek franchise. It was released on December 7, 1979, and starred William Shatner as Captain James T. Kirk, Leonard Nimoy as Spock, DeForest Kelley as Dr. McCoy, James Doohan as Scotty, and Walter Koenig as Ensign Chekov. Other Star Trek cast members featured in this movie include George Takei, Nichelle Nichols, and Majel Barrett.

Star Trek: First Contact (1996)

The eighth movie in the Star Trek franchise was named Star Trek: First Contact. It is among the most successful film to date- grossing over the US $84 million domestically upon its release on November 22, 1996. This major motion picture featured several cast members from various Star Trek series, including William Shatner as Jean-Luc Picard, Patrick Stewart as Captain Jean-Luc Picard, LeVar Burton as Geordi La Forge, and Walter Koenig as Pavel Chekov. Other cast members included in this movie are Michael Dorn, James Doohan, and Angelyna Mary Janeway.

 

Star Trek: Insurrection (1998)

Star Trek: Insurrection was another of the Star Trek films produced by Paramount Pictures. It grossed the US $70 million upon its release on November 29, 1998. While a significant box office success for the franchise, critics complained that it has the same plot concept with a different title as an episode from The Next Generation television series entitled “The Outrageous Okona.” This movie featured appearances by Brent Spiner as Lieutenant Commander Data, Jonathan Frakes as Will Riker, Levar Burton as Geordi La Forge, and Marina Sirtis as Counselor Deanna Troi.

 

Star Trek: Nemesis (2002)

Another major motion picture in the Star Trek franchise was titled Star Trek: Nemesis. It is also considered one of the most successful movies in terms of box office, grossing the US $43 million domestically upon its release on December 13, 2002. The cast members who made their appearance in this film include Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, and Gates McFadden. In addition, this movie featured a villain named Shinzon, played by Tom Hardy.

The eleventh Star Trek film was released in May of 2009. It is known primarily under the title “Star Trek,” though it has been noted that its full title is actually “Star Trek (titled as simply Star Trek within promotional materials). ” This action-adventure science fiction movie grossed the US $257 million domestically upon its release on May 8, 2009. The cast members who made their appearance in this movie include Chris Pine as Captain James Tiberius Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Commander Spock, Karl Urban as Leonard ‘Bones’ McCoy, and Eric Bana as Nero.

 

Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)

Star Trek Into Darkness was another major motion picture sequel to the original Star Trek reboot film. It grossed the US $467 million domestically upon its release on May 17, 2013. This action-adventure science fiction film features a large ensemble cast that includes Chris Pine as Captain Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Commander Spock, Zoe Saldana as Lieutenant Nyota Uhura, and Benedict Cumberbatch as John Harrison. This movie has been nominated for two Academy Awards, including Best Visual Effects and Best Sound Editing.

Another movie sequel in the Star Trek franchise is titled Star Trek Beyond. It was released on July 22, 2016. This action-adventure science fiction film has been estimated to gross approximately US $55 million domestically upon its release. The cast members who make their appearance in this movie include Chris Pine as Captain Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Commander Spock, Karl Urban as Lieutenant Leonard ‘Bones’ McCoy, and Simon Pegg as Scotty. In addition, this movie stars Idris Elba playing the primary antagonist named Krall and Sofia Boutella playing the role of Jaylah. This was announced at the San Diego Comic-Con 2015.
