The aircraft was characterized by a high-power engine, speed, excellent visibility and a long retractable chassis, which was forced by the use of a propeller with a diameter of up to 4.06 m. It was armed with six 12.7 mm guns, two 450 kg bombs and eight unguided HVAR 127 mm missiles. The Vought F4U was equipped with the U.S. Navy during the Pacific battles. In Europe, corsairs in British service were involved in attacks on the battleship Tirpitz. The aircraft was also used in the early stages of the Korean War.
