Monopoly is a beloved family board game that has been helping families come together in a friendly competition since the 1930s. This classic property buying game shows us the highs and lows of being a property owner — strike it rich by chance or lose it all in a roll of the dice!
Monopoly has its origins in the wildly fluctuating property markets of America during the Great Depression. It was based on an earlier game called “”The Landlord’s Game”” which was designed to expose the evils of actual monopolies (that is concentrations of land owned by one company or person). Despite being based on not so exciting economic theory, the game itself is a huge hit around the world and is now a household name with TV game shows, video games and various spin off games based on the original.
This classic version of Monopoly is played on a board with dice and traditional tokens to represent each player. The aim is to race around the spots on the board, amassing properties and (hopefully) avoiding the pitfalls of landing on an opponent’s property and being forced to cough up the “”rent”” or being sent “”directly to jail””. Community Chest and Chance cards introduce surprise plot twists to keep things interesting.
The classic Monopoly board game is a must for all homes! It makes great family fun at parties and during downtime on weekends or during the holidays. It also makes an exciting gift for kids at Easter or for Christmas.
