The first plasma lamp was invented by Nikola Tesla through his experimentation with high frequency currents in an evacuated glass tube with the intent of studying high voltage phenomena. The outer orb is filled with a mixture of different gases at low pressure, and driven by high frequency alternating current at high voltage, generated by a high voltage transformer. A much smaller orb situated in the centre serves as an electrode, causing plasma filaments to extend from the inner electrode to the outer glass insulator.
"In English please?" we now hear you ask. Well, basically placing your hand near the surface alters the high-frequency electric field being generated within, causing a single beam to migrate from its centre to the point of contact. Cool, eh?
